I generally tend to recommend buying wide massage tables. This is a personal preference of mind because I think it is more comfortable for the client to have some space to lay down on, and since I move my clients in several positions during a massage session I also like to have more room.
However, if you are short a wide massage table might not be good for you, because for some massage techniques you will have to lean over a lot and that might cause your back to hurt.
In these cases a narrow massage table is a better option. But you still want to be able to treat clients with large bodies. On a narrow mat they might not be able to fully relax because they all the time have to make sure that they arms don’t fall of the table.
That is where armrests for massage tables come in handy. Because you can add them to your massage table on a per client basis. Should you need an armrest for one session just put it on the table and remove it afterwards.
I sometimes used to take the armrests of, but clients who were already used to the armrests told me that they prefer if the table has an armrest. So it really does make a difference in the experience of your client.
Not every massage table supports armrests, but there are massage tables that do.
There are also different kinds of armrests. Most of the time a massage therapist only thinks of an armrest that gets attached to the sides of his or her massage table. But there are also armrests for massage tables that are specially designed when a client is lying face down with his face in the face cradle so that he or she can rest his arms comfortably underneath his head. This is a much more relaxing position than the little bit unnatural position of having your arms to the side and allows for better relaxation.

Thank you so much for this information; I’ve been looking for tables with armrests online for a while now and was so happy to find someone that did the research for me! Thanks again!
